Catcher’s Mask is introduced in Boston.

April 12, 1877

Harvard’s James Tyng first uses the device in a game against the Lynn Live Oaks. The first catcher’s mask in the U.S., it was adapted from a fencing mask by his teammate Fred Thayer as a way to help persuade Tyng to move from the outfield to behind the plate. Thayer patents the invention in 1878.
